A cabinet with a staircase.
A staircase allows us to access a higher or lower level in space, but what's under or inside them is often unseen. The space underneath a staircase had been one of my major site of curiosity as a child, and I created this piece as an answer to my childhood wonders. Many symbolic items were introduced into this cabinet. The inside is lined with soft fabric, which conveys a sense of protectiveness; items connected with childhood: rocking horse and a squishy ball; items that symbolize life: feather, moss, fur, butterfly, snail, bone, and lung. Yet there are also hints of danger underlying this seeming fairytale: a pocket knife hidden in furs and a radiation detector hung on a fabric wall. This is because there are also elements of danger in one's childhood. This danger lies not only in inappropriate toys and possible traumatic experiences, but more importantly in the fundamental plasticity of one's mind as a child. The handle on the box also conveys a similar idea: we carry our early memories with us throughout our life, while also being "carried away" by them-- they can shape us in some definitive ways.
