Surge! is an indefinite storytelling project centered around a few fictional characters. On each instance a story is told through a certain perspective via a certain genre of art-- illustration, graphic novel, net art, video game... With the addition of each piece of the puzzle, I am learning a little bit more about these characters and the world they dwell in, sharing new information with my audience along the way.
As the foundation of the Surge! project, the story in this graphic novel has been slowly building up in the back of my mind for years. the universal obsession with head hair is very unique to human culture, and we rely heavily on hairstyle to show our identity and personality and in turn identify those of others. Sometimes I think about the possiblity of certain kinds of spirits dwelling inside certain types of hairstyles... and does a braid not look like an elephant trunk? Elephant, too, holds great significance in ancient religions as well as contemporary psychedelic aesthetics. Thus begins the story of an encounter with a woman who symbioses with a spiritual elephant in her hair.
